We’re Chikyu Lab—where science meets nature.

Our tours are eco-experiences that take you out to sea with a researcher, where you can engage in real observation and field research. Through encounters with marine life, we aim to share the importance of biodiversity in a way that is both meaningful and accessible.

We create opportunities for everyone to connect with nature, enjoy the experience, and reflect on our relationship with the natural world and its future.

Your guide will be Dr. Mumi Kikuchi, a marine biologist and the founder of Chikyu Lab, who will accompany you throughout the tour.

Tours

Join a Research & Nature Tour in Miyakojima—head out to sea with a researcher and try real observation and survey activities.

We offer customized tours based on your interests and what you would like to learn.

Our signature experience is a three-hour private sabani tour. Each tour is available for 2 to 5 guests, allowing for a more personal and engaging experience. Prices start from JPY 35,000 per person.

As the tour content and any equipment rental may vary depending on your preferences, please feel free to contact us to discuss the best plan for you.

Guests who wish to join as a solo traveler are also welcome to get in touch.

Our Commitment to Biodiversity Conservation

Dugong Research

In recent years, dugong sightings around Miyakojima (Miyako Island) have been increasing, highlighting this area as an important habitat.
At Chikyu Lab, we conduct dugong ecology research and also offer workshops and learning materials so people can learn about dugongs and the marine environment in an engaging way.
Working with aquariums, universities, and researchers, we’re building an environmental education network that’s enjoyable and accessible for everyone—from children to adults.

Sea Turtle Research

Green turtles, which also feed on seagrass like dugongs, are an essential part of Miyakojima’s marine ecosystem.
In partnership with research institutions, we carry out regular drone-based monitoring. We then use the data to develop learning programs that both kids and adults can enjoy—turning real research into hands-on discovery.
Through research and educational content development, we aim to expand science-based learning and experiences that help more people connect with Miyakojima’s marine biodiversity.

DEFENDER AWARDSは、自然環境や地域社会を守るために挑戦する団体を応援するアワードです。

今回ご紹介するのは、受賞者のひとつである一般社団法人 Next Commons Labです。

その活動の舞台は、三重県・尾鷲。
山々に囲まれた流域、舗装されていない林道、深い森の奥、川沿いの険しいフィールド。
人が簡単には立ち入れないような場所で、自然と地域の未来を守る取り組みが続いています。

この地は、準絶滅危惧種アカハライモリが個体数を回復した奇跡の流域でもあります。

そのフィールドの中心に、今DEFENDERがいます。
　
　

「DEFENDERという名の守り手と、肩を並べてコモンズを守っていく」
　
　
その想いは、今、現実のものとなりつつあります。

その言葉が現実となり、2年間で100名以上の流域再生プロフェッショナルを育成し、山形・静岡・奈良・奄美大島へと広がる100年戦略が、今まさに動き始めました。

尾鷲から始まった挑戦は、一つの地域にとどまらず、各地へと広がっています。

自然環境を守ることは、地域の暮らしや未来を守ることでもあります。
こうした取り組みが、さらに多くの場所へ広がっていくことを願っています。

【ご報告】DEFENDER AWARDSの受賞団体が決定しました。

DEFENDER AWARDSは、地域で自然保護や人道支援に取り組む小規模団体を支援するグローバルアワードです。
世界7カ国・最終候補56団体から各国の受賞団体が選ばれます。

私は今回、日本パネリスト（助成団体を選ぶ審査員）として選考に協力しました。

日本代表として選ばれたのは、Next Commons Labの
「流域リジェネレーション：地球を守る100年戦略��と人材育成」。

森・川・里・海をひと続きの“コモンズ”として捉え、流域を再生・維持する仕組みづくりに取り組むプロジェクトです。

受賞団体には、DEFENDER 1台／2,000万円の活動資金／専門家によるメンタリングサポートが提供されます。

選考に関わる中で、現場の課題に向き合い、仕組みをつくり、人を育てていく力の大きさを改めて感じました。

私たちパネリストも、皆さまとの活動を楽しみにしています。活動の中で多くの学びを得られることを期待しています。

＜ツアー参加者募集中です＞

宮古島で始まったジュゴン調査ツアーは、
現在「ちきゅう研究所（ラボ）」として、
観察・学び・発見を大切にしながら活動を続けていきます。

2026年度の第一弾となる調査ツアーは、
2026年2月27日（金）12:30 に実施します。

このツアーは、
生きものを「見に行く」ツアーではありません。

ジュゴンが暮らしている海を観察し、
海草藻場や海の環境を体験しながら、
生きものと環境を知っていただく時間です☺️

今回は、参加者4名様を募集しております。
ツアー実施記録としての写真・映像撮影に
ご協力いただける方を対象としています。

また、安全管理のため、
スノーケル経験のある方にご参加をお願いしています。

「調査」と聞くと少し難しく感じるかもしれませんが、
特別な知識がなくても大丈夫です。

海が好きで、
知ることや学ぶことを楽しめる方を歓迎いたします。

ガイドは海洋生物学者の菊池夢美が行います。

沖縄のジュゴンを知る③
いま、私たちにできること

沖縄のジュゴンをめぐっては、
生きものそのものを直接調べることが難しいため、
現在は、生息環境や海草藻場を中心とした
限られた調査が行われています。
　
　
生態や行動については、
まだわかっていないことも多く、
それを一つずつ明らかにしていくことが、
保全の第一歩になります。
　
　
同時に大切なのが、
知ること、考えること、対話すること、
そして行動することです。
　
　
サイエンスカフェや講演会など、
研究者と社会が向き合う場では、
生きものと一緒に生きていくための情報が、
共有されていきます。
　
　
生きものを大切に思う気持ちは、
日常の延長線上にあります。
知ることは、
海を守ることにつながっています。
　
　
これからも、
研究と教育、対話を通して、
沖縄のジュゴンについて発信を続けていきます。

What we can do now

Direct research on dugongs in Okinawa is limited.
Current studies mainly focus on seagrass beds
and traces of grazing.

Learning, thinking, talking, and taking action
are all important steps.

沖縄のジュゴンを知る②
なぜ、ジュゴンは見られなくなったのか？

琉球王国の時代、
ジュゴンは人の暮らしと深く関わる存在でした。

税として納められたり、
中国からの使者をもてなす料理として使われた記録も残っています。
　
　
宮古島では、
「おじいの若い頃には、この近くにジュゴンがたくさんいた」
という地域の証言も伝えられています。
　
　
しかし現在、
沖縄の海で確認されているジュゴンは、
ごくわずかな個体に限られています。

その背景には、
人の暮らしと海の環境の変化があります。
　
　
ジュゴンは、漁網に誤ってかかってしまったり、
船舶と衝突して命を落とすことがあります。
日本では混獲が、
世界各地では船舶との衝突が問題になってきました。
法律で守られていても、
今もなお、食べるための密猟が続いている地域もあります。
　
　
また、ジュゴンの主食である海草が育つ藻場は、
埋め立てや水質の変化によって減少してきました。
食べものを失うことは、
ジュゴンの生存に直接影響します。
　
　
ジュゴンは現在、
IUCNレッドリストで
「絶滅危急種（Vulnerable）」に指定され、
日本では天然記念物として保護されています。

一方で、
その生態には、まだわかっていないことも多く、
具体的な保全策を立てることが難しいという課題もあります。
　
　
静かに生きてきたジュゴンが、
静かに見られなくなっていった理由。
次回は、いま行われている調査や研究、
そして、私たちにできることを紹介します。

Why have dugongs become so rare?

Dugongs once lived close to people in Okinawa.
Coastal development, fishing, and the loss of seagrass beds
have gradually reduced their habitat.

They are now listed as Vulnerable on the IUCN Red List.

沖縄のジュゴンを知る①
沖縄にやってくるジュゴンとは？

ジュゴンは、インド洋から西太平洋にかけて
約40カ国で生息が確認されています。

日本では唯一沖縄にだけ生息しています。

かつては沖縄本島から宮古島、多良間島、石垣島、
西表島、波照間島などで目撃されました。
　
　
ジュゴン（Dugong dugon）は、マナティーと同じ
「海牛類（かいぎゅうるい）」に分類される、
海のほ乳類です。

体長は3メートル以上、体重は300キロを超えることも。

海牛類は草食性で、浅い海に広がる
海草（うみくさ）藻場をすみかとしています。
　
　
ジュゴンの尾びれは三角形で、イルカに似た形をしています。

口は下向きに伸びていて、
海底に生える海草を食べるのに適した形です。

マナティーとジュゴンのちがいは、顔を見比べてもよくわかります。
　
　　
かつては沖縄本島や宮古島など、
各地の沿岸でジュゴンの姿が見られていたと言われています。

実は、沖縄の海にとって、
ジュゴンは決して特別すぎる存在ではありませんでした。
　
浅い海に広がる海草場は、ジュゴンが食事をし、静かに暮らす大切な場所です。
その環境があるからこそ、ジュゴンは沖縄の海にやってきます。
　
　
これから数回に分けて、ジュゴンを紹介していきます。

About Dugongs in Okinawa

Dugongs are the only marine mammals of this kind living in Japan,
found in the shallow waters around Okinawa.

They are herbivorous marine mammals that feed on seagrass,
and depend on healthy coastal habitats to survive.

DEFENDER AWARDS 最終選考会に参加しました

先日、地域の自然環境の保全や人道支援に取り組む団体を支援するプログラム「DEFENDER AWARDS」の最終選考会に、パネリストとして参加させていただきました。

本年度、日本から選出された最終候補8団体は以下の通りです。

マナティーの保全研究に携わってきた者として、この最終選考会は私にとって大きな学びと気づきの場でした。
自然環境の保全は一朝一夕に解決できるものではなく、長い時間をかけて地道な努力を積み重ねていくことが求められます。
その道のりは決して平坦ではありませんが、それぞれの現場で誠実に取り組んでおられる皆様の姿に深く心を動かされました。
選考は非常に難しい判断の連続でしたが、気持ちとしてはすべての団体を応援したい思いでいっぱいでした。

この経験を通じて、「人と自然が共に生きる未来」は、確かな歩みの先にあると改めて感じています。海洋生物の研究者として、そしてこの地球に生きる一人の人間として、こうした活動がさらに広がっていくことを心から願っています。

As it grazes, the dugong moves slowly across the seabed,
leaving gentle traces —
signs that it has been there.

私たちの想い

ちきゅう研究所（ちきゅうラボ）の菊池夢美です。
私は宮古島でエコツアーと環境教育をすすめています。

私は大学生の頃、水族館で出会ったマナティーに一目惚れしました。
その出会いが、人生を変えました。

アマゾン川のマナティーを研究テーマに選び、博士号を取得。
メキシコ、ペルー、そしてカメルーンへとフィールドを広げ、マナティーの調査研究と保全プロジェクトを進めてきました。
水族館と連携して行動研究にも取り組んでいます。

世界中のマナティーたちを見つめてきて、強く感じたのは—「研究だけでは、守れない」ということ。

どれだけ論文を書いても、現地でマナティーと共に生きる人たちには届きませんでした。
本当に必要なのは、科学的な知識を“わかりやすく伝えること”。
それが、保全の第一歩だと思いました。

そこで、一般社団法人マナティー研究所を立ち上げて、国内外で環境教育を行ってきました。

けれど、教室の中では伝えきれないものがあります。
もっとみんなを私のフィールドに連れていきたいーそれを実現できる“現場”が必要だと感じました。

日本には野生のマナティーはいません。
けれどその仲間であるジュゴンが、今も沖縄の海に姿を見せています。
特に、宮古島ではジュゴンの目撃例が多く、エサ植物を食べた跡もたくさん確認されています。

ここ宮古島で、ジュゴンや生きものを通して海の生態系を学び、自然と向き合う体験を広めていきたい。
それが、私がこの地で活動を始めた理由です。

研究者として、そして自然を大切に想うひとりとして。
宮古島の海から、“知ること”を通じて守る活動を続けていきます。

Hello, I’m Dr. Mumi Kikuchi, marine biologist and founder of the Japan Manatee Education and Study Lab (JAMES).
Here on Miyako Island, I lead Chikyu Lab — connecting science, education, and eco-tourism to protect the ocean.

My journey began when I met manatees at Okinawa Churaumi Aquarium as a student — a moment that changed my life.
After earning my Ph.D. on Amazonian manatees, I expanded my research to Mexico, Peru, and Cameroon, leading global conservation projects.

Through years of work I learned one truth:
Science alone cannot protect nature.

Real conservation begins when knowledge is shared and experienced.
That belief led me to create JAMES, promoting environmental education and the beauty of biodiversity.

But I wanted people to step outside the classroom — to see, feel, and learn directly from the living nature.

Japan has no wild manatees, but their close relative, the dugong, still visits the waters around Okinawa.
Miyako’s rich seagrass meadows make it the perfect place to learn about this gentle species.

To make this vision real, I founded Chikyu Lab, a new initiative born from the JAMES.
Through eco-tours and hands-on learning, we invite families, students, and organizations to discover and protect the sea together.

As a researcher — and as someone who loves the nature — I’m committed to sharing knowledge and inspiring action to keep Miyako’s blue waters alive for the future.

宮古島の海へ - 生きものたちの暮らす場所 -

美しい宮古島の海。
ここには、たくさんの生きものたちが暮らしています。

サンゴの森をすみかにする魚たち、海草を食べるウミガメ、そして、今では希少になりつつある海草の森も広がっています。

ジュゴンもその仲間のひとり。

参加者は、宮古島の伝統的な木造船「サバニ」に乗り込み、絶滅危惧種ジュゴンの痕跡を探しながら、海の生きものたちの暮らしを調べます。

本ツアーでは、絶滅危惧種のジュゴンについて紹介します。
ジュゴンが食べた海草の跡やフンを観察することで、海の生態系のつながりや、環境を守る大切さを五感で感じることができます。
　
　
この「ジュゴン調査ツアー」は、2024年に助成金事業の一環としてスタートしました。
そして今年、内容をさらに発展させ、ちきゅう研究所（ちきゅうラボ）が新たに事業を引き継ぎ、実施していきます。

本ツアーでは、海牛類（マナティー・ジュゴン）の専門家である海洋生物学者・菊池夢美博士がガイドとして同行。

博士の解説を聞きながら、ジュゴンやウミガメ、海草など、宮古島の豊かな海の仕組みを楽しく学びます。

「ただ見る」だけではなく、
「調べて、知る」ことで、
海とのつながりを深く感じられる旅です。

企画は、一般社団法人マナティー研究所。
運営・監修はちきゅう研究所（ちきゅうラボ）。

研究者とともに自然を学ぶ体験を通して、海をたいせつにするための新しい一歩を踏み出しましょう。

This unique eco tour combines field research and hands-on learning — a rare research-based ecotourism experience in Japan.
