Scientist-Guided Eco Tours
on Miyako Island
Discover, Learn, Enjoy

About
WELCOME!
Chikyu lab connects science, nature, and people.
Based on Miyako Island, we share the importance of biodiversity through marine life such as dugongs and sea turtles.
Our scientist-guided eco tours introduce Miyako Island’s marine life, biodiversity, and conservation in an enjoyable and accessible way.
Your guide is Dr. Mumi Kikuchi, a marine biologist specializing in manatees, dugongs, and marine conservation. She earned her PhD from the University of Tokyo and is now based on Miyako Island.
Discover a Unique Marine Environment
Miyako Island’s coastal waters are more than beautiful.
Their seagrass beds support green sea turtles, and rare dugongs also visit this area.
Join our eco tours and discover this unique marine environment.
Scientist-Guided Eco Tours
Our eco tours are small-group experiences guided by a marine biologist.
Explanations can be adjusted to the age and interests of the participants.
Explore Miyako Island’s marine life, biodiversity, and conservation through a scientist-guided experience.
Our signature experience is a private sabani boat tour for small groups.
Tour content may vary depending on the season, weather, and sea conditions.

Our Commitment to Biodiversity Conservation
Dugong Research
In recent years, dugong sightings around Miyakojima (Miyako Island) have been increasing, highlighting this area as an important habitat.
At Chikyu Lab, we conduct dugong ecology research and also offer workshops and learning materials so people can learn about dugongs and the marine environment in an engaging way.
Working with aquariums, universities, and researchers, we’re building an environmental education network that’s enjoyable and accessible for everyone—from children to adults.

Sea Turtle Research
Green turtles, which also feed on seagrass like dugongs, are an essential part of Miyakojima’s marine ecosystem.
In partnership with research institutions, we carry out regular drone-based monitoring. We then use the data to develop learning programs that both kids and adults can enjoy—turning real research into hands-on discovery.
Through research and educational content development, we aim to expand science-based learning and experiences that help more people connect with Miyakojima’s marine biodiversity.
